Support with Carlee

Meet Carlee Thomson - you can follow her @car.thomson

Meet @car.thomson. She has completely transformed my thoughts on what being a support system truly means.

Make sure your partner is really in it for the long haul before ALLOWING them to go through the process with you. Make sure the group of people you carry along in the journey are people who are WORTHY of seeing you at your worst 👏🏻✨.

With words like allow and worthy, she reminds us breasties that it’s not just a given that someone gets to be by our side. And it isn’t up to them to decide if they want to be. It’s up to US. She is the ultimate Warrior Crush Wednesday and I’m honored to share her wisdom!!

Three weeks after my prophylactic double mastectomy my partner of three years and I decided it was time to end our relationship. We lived together. We had a cat together (what felt like a baby) and I was oh-so-certain he was "the one." In retrospect, my medical appointments and my rollercoaster of emotions, both after and prior to surgery, were never a priority or concern for my partner and the break-up made my recovery that much harder. I could tell you about my surgery in detail. But anyone who has gone through this could tell you that. My best advice to anyone going through this, or any other surgery, is to make sure the group of people you carry along in the journey are people who are worthy of seeing you at your worst. Who are supportive through both your challenges and successes. And most of all - people who would never abandon you on your worst of days.

Of course I constantly wonder if the reason this happened is because of how I look now, or the genes that I carry. But this journey has made me realize I am SO much more than those things. I also know that however excruciatingly painful the last few months have been (in more ways than one) it's been an absolute blessing in disguise. This is not someone that deserves everything I am, including my BRCA2 gene. So thank you to my incredible mom and amazing friends who have made my recovery INCREDIBLE and made me feel whole and gorgeous every day. And an even bigger thank you to Paige- who has provided such a wonderful community of Breasties that reminds us that we are never alone in this journey.
